The stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the ATP Houston clay-court tournament as fourth-seeded American Tommy Paul prepares to face Argentina’s Roman Burruchaga in Sunday’s final. In a high-stakes Saturday semifinal at the River Oaks Country Club, Paul outlasted fellow American and 2023 champion Frances Tiafoe in a three-set marathon, while Burruchaga continued his dream run with a dominant victory over his close friend and compatriot.
Tommy Paul’s path to the final was anything but easy. The world No. 21 survived a rain-delayed thriller, eventually prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9/7) against “Big Foe.” The victory improves Paul’s head-to-head record against Tiafoe to 4-1 and denies the latter a fourth consecutive appearance in the Houston final. Reflecting on the intense battle, the 28-year-old Paul noted, “I did a good job of playing when I needed to… that was an incredible match.” Having finished as a runner-up in Delray Beach this past February, Paul is now hunting for his first career title on clay.
Standing in his way is the tournament’s surprise package, Roman Burruchaga. The world No. 77 reached his first-ever ATP final by completely overpowering Thiago Tirante 6-1, 6-1 in just 61 minutes. Burruchaga, the son of 1986 World Cup hero Jorge Burruchaga, didn’t face a single break point throughout the match, putting a clinical end to Tirante’s giant-killing week. “We are very close friends, so it is never easy,” Burruchaga said post-match, acknowledging the difficulty of facing a peer while celebrating his own historic milestone.
Sunday’s clash represents a significant moment for both players: Paul is looking to cement his status as a multi-surface threat, while Burruchaga aims to follow in his father’s footsteps by securing a major international trophy on American soil. With the fast-sliding clay of Houston favoring both men’s movement, the final promises a tactical battle between Paul’s veteran experience and Burruchaga’s relentless baseline pressure.
Do you think Tommy Paul’s experience in high-pressure ATP finals will give him the edge over Roman Burruchaga, who is playing in his first-ever title match?
