Tonye Cole, an All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor in Rivers State, has said that the party and its candidates will organize campaign rallies in all 23 of the local government areas of the state, notwithstanding Executive Order 21, which Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike just signed.
The Executive Order, which forbids using public schools that Rivers residents paid to build for political parties’ events without prior consent from the state Ministry of Education, was termed by him as annoying.
Cole claimed that the law is an effort by Wike to quell opposition in the state in a statement provided to THE PREMIER NEWS in Port Harcourt by the spokesman of the Tonye Cole Campaign Organization, Sogbeye Eli.
For a man with such a well-known antipathy to civil engagements, the statement says, “We know that it will be easier for the camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for the opposition parties to get approvals from Wike’s appointees and cheerleaders.
For the record, we want to clarify unequivocally that the governor’s law is not only offensive but also represents the desperate measures taken by a coward who is constantly at odds with democracy in order to repress and silence the state’s opposition parties. Therefore, we are urging all men of good will and Rivers people, wherever they may be, to denounce this despot’s despotic outbursts and sick dread of losing his position of authority.
“The All Progressives Congress shall campaign with our candidates across the length and breadth of Rivers State as provided under the constitution and as prescribed by law, and hereby gives notice to the chairmen of the 23 councils that the governor has directed to enforce his punitive and draconian directive under Executive Order 21.
