The England national team has hit a stumbling block in their preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 following the withdrawal of Eberechi Eze. The talented Arsenal playmaker has been ruled out of the upcoming international window due to a persistent calf problem. This news comes as a significant blow to both club and country, as the midfielder was forced to watch from the sidelines during Arsenal’s recent 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the high-stakes League Cup final.

England manager Thomas Tuchel had originally included the creative star in his expansive 35-man squad announced last Friday. The Three Lions were counting on Eze’s flair for their high-profile friendlies against Uruguay on March 27 and Japan four days later, both scheduled to take place at the iconic Wembley Stadium. However, those plans have now been scrapped as the medical team focuses on the player’s recovery.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta provided a somber update to reporters on Sunday, confirming that the injury is serious enough to prevent international travel. “No, he’s out,” Arteta stated clearly when asked about the player’s availability. The manager explained that the club intends to conduct a follow-up scan in roughly a week to determine the full extent of the damage to the leg. “We have to do another scan in six or seven days and wait and see the results,” he added, noting the specific focus on the calf area.

With a vacancy now open in the national setup, reports across British media suggest that Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes is the leading candidate to step in as a replacement. As England looks to fine-tune their tactics for the upcoming world stage, fans will be anxiously awaiting news on how long one of their brightest creative sparks will remain out of action.

Do you think Harvey Barnes is the right choice to replace Eze in the current England lineup?
