Felix Auger-Aliassime has confirmed the end of his long-standing partnership with coach Frederic Fontang following his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Novak Djokovic. The Auger-Aliassime coaching change brings to a close a successful relationship that lasted almost 10 years.
During their time together, Fontang helped guide the Canadian star to nine ATP singles titles and a career-best ranking of world No. 4. The pair began working together when Auger-Aliassime was just 16, and the coach played a key role in his rise on the ATP Tour.
Announcing the decision in an Instagram post on Friday, Auger-Aliassime reflected on the impact his coach had on both his career and personal life. He wrote, “After nearly 10 years of working together, it has recently been decided that Wimbledon would be my last tournament with Frederic by my side as my coach.”
The Canadian also paid tribute to Fontang for his guidance over the years, adding, “Since I was 16 years old, he has guided my development and helped me experience incredible moments through this sport. He has also been by my side during the toughest moments of my career.”
He continued, “In those difficult times, I always found in him the calm, composure and wisdom I needed to overcome those challenges. Looking back today, I can say that beyond being an outstanding coach, he has been a true mentor throughout my journey into adulthood.”
The Auger-Aliassime coaching change comes after his five-set loss to Djokovic at Wimbledon, ending one of the longest player-coach partnerships on the ATP Tour.
