The German Football Federation (DFB) has confirmed that it is moving closer to appointing Jurgen Klopp as the next Germany coach. The announcement came on Saturday after senior DFB officials met Klopp in New York to discuss the role. While both sides have agreed on the main parts of a possible deal, the move still depends on approval from Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull.
The DFB revealed that president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held detailed talks with Klopp on Friday. After the meeting, the federation said, “During this constructive discussion, an understanding was reached on the key points of a potential contract.” It also confirmed that further discussions will continue next week. The Germany coach appointment remains subject to an agreement with Red Bull, but both parties believe they can complete the process successfully.
Jurgen Klopp has remained the leading choice to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s round-of-32 World Cup exit following a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. The highly respected manager built his reputation through outstanding success with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
After leaving Liverpool in 2024, Klopp accepted the role of head of global football at Red Bull, where he oversees clubs across Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States, and Japan. Last weekend, he said he was “more than recharged”, raising hopes about a return to coaching.
Germany has struggled to match its past success since winning the World Cup in Brazil 12 years ago. The national side has suffered two straight group-stage exits before its latest disappointment in North America, making the search for the next Germany coach even more important.
Could Jurgen Klopp be the manager to lead Germany back to the top of world football?
