Babachir Lawal political setback has triggered fresh debate after political commentator Imran Wakili claimed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may struggle to recover before the 2027 elections.
Writing on X on Thursday, Wakili argued that the Babachir Lawal political setback weakened the ADC by contributing to the departure of several high-profile politicians. He listed former Adamawa State Governor Jibrilla Bindow, Senator Ishaku Abbo, Senator Aishatu Binani and former Governor Murtala Nyako among those he said had left the party.
“The damage Babachir did to Atiku and ADC—there is no coming back from it,” Wakili wrote, adding that Atiku was now left without key political allies in the party.
Meanwhile, Babachir Lawal resigned from the ADC last month. The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation accused the party of operating a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Furthermore, Lawal alleged that Atiku and some of his allies were driven by ethnic and religious interests. He also argued that Atiku’s emergence as a presidential candidate would ultimately improve President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office.
However, neither Atiku Abubakar nor the ADC has publicly responded to Wakili’s latest claims. The allegations remain political opinions and have not been independently verified.
