State Police Act has drawn fresh criticism after the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum argued that the new law cannot solve Nigeria’s worsening security crisis. The group said the State Police Act risks shifting responsibility for insecurity from the Federal Government to state governments without addressing the root causes.
Speaking through its president, Akin Malaolu, the forum warned that unclear jurisdiction between federal and state police could create confusion in tackling terrorism, kidnapping and armed robbery. It also questioned how states would finance the new police system, noting that many already struggle with limited resources.
Furthermore, the group urged the government to suspend implementation until funding, oversight and revenue-sharing issues are resolved. It maintained that the State Police Act should form part of a broader security reform rather than a rushed political solution.
