Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of pressing ahead with what he described as “impure” tax laws that could deepen poverty among Nigerians and weaken sub-national governments.

Mohammed made the allegation in a statement issued on Tuesday, where he faulted the Federal Government for refusing to reconsider the new tax framework despite growing concerns over its impact on citizens and states.

He argued that the tax laws, if implemented as currently designed, would place an excessive burden on ordinary Nigerians while shrinking the financial capacity of state governments.

“In spite of all the impurities, they are still going ahead with it to impoverish the common man and the sub-nationals, and we are keeping quiet,” the governor said.

The Bauchi governor urged the Federal Government to urgently review the tax laws to prevent further economic strain and protect the interests of Nigerians at the grassroots.

His remarks came amid heightened political tension, as Mohammed pushed back against what he described as a witch-hunt by the Tinubu administration.

Earlier, the governor had alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government was deploying anti-graft agencies to pressure opposition governors into defecting to the ruling party, a claim the Federal Government has not officially responded to.
