Tunji Wusu –

The number of fatalities from Saturday’s armed men attack on the communities of Akpuuna and Diom in Benue State’s Ukum Local Government Area has increased to 30, as more corpses have been found and some of the seriously injured victims have died.

Recall that on Saturday morning about 11 a.m., a group of armed men riding motorcycles entered the towns of Akpuuna and Diom, where no less than 24 people were brutally murdered and several more suffered significant injuries.

The attackers also destroyed a number of homes and the neighborhood’s market with fire.
The number of deaths from the attack on Saturday has increased to 30, according to Mr. Kartyo Tyoumbur, chairman of the Ukum Council, who is currently under suspension.

According to the information that is currently available, more dead were found in the jungle, and several people who were seriously injured did not survive as a result of their injuries. It is sad, truly. We fervently hope we don’t lose any more of the injured people.

The unwarranted attack and the loss of innocent life in the impacted areas have been denounced by Governor Hyacinth Alia in the interim.

In a statement released by his chief press secretary Tersoo Kula yesterday in response to the tragedy, the governor said: “It is disappointing and quite disheartening to receive the news that innocent and law-abiding citizens have been attacked and killed in cold blood for a no cause.”

Governor Alia appealed for composure and urged the locals to support security services by providing them with useful information that would help reduce insecurity in their area while assuring of a prompt response from the state administration.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, also denounced the incident in a statement released by the State Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, and vowed to bring the perpetrators to court.

The party called on security organizations to assist the government “in maintaining law and order, and making sure that all of the culprits are brought to justice in order to serve as a deterrent.”
