The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on at the age of 91.

The revered monarch died on Sunday, bringing an end to an era marked by dignity, service, and extraordinary longevity on the throne.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and reigned for over six decades, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. He was a prominent member of the House of Anikinaiya and a symbol of stability and tradition in the Ijebu Kingdom.

The monarch’s death comes just hours after the nation was rocked by the news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his longtime friend and contemporary, who died in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.

Oba Adetona’s reign witnessed significant growth in Ijebuland, particularly in education, cultural development, and unity among Yoruba monarchs. He was widely respected across Nigeria for his candor, wisdom, and commitment to traditional values in a modernizing society.

Further details surrounding funeral arrangements and official state honors are expected to be announced by the Ogun State Government and the royal family in the coming days.

The nation now mourns the loss of two historic figures whose legacies have left indelible marks on Nigeria’s sociopolitical and cultural landscape
