Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82.
His death was announced today, July 13, 2025, by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Details surrounding the cause of death remain unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Buhari, a retired Major General, ruled Nigeria as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later served two terms as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
His administration was known for its anti-corruption crusade, emphasis on security, and efforts to revamp Nigeria’s infrastructure. However, it also faced criticism over rising insecurity, economic hardship, and perceived suppression of dissent.
Condolences have started pouring in from political leaders, allies, and Nigerians across the globe, many remembering him as a disciplined leader who shaped Nigeria’s political trajectory over four decades.
The Federal Government is expected to announce burial arrangements and a national mourning schedule in due course.
