The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejected the results of the recent Edo State Governorship election, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum expressed the party’s discontent, asserting that the people of Edo State voted for the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and expect him to be declared the governor-elect.
Damagum called on INEC to use provisions within the Electoral Act to address what he described as a flawed electoral process. He urged the electoral body to “retraces its steps and ensure that the will of the people is honored.”
The PDP leader alleged that there were prior warnings about collusion between the All Progressives Congress (APC), a “compromised INEC,” and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the zone to manipulate the election outcome.
In the election, APC candidate Monday Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, while his closest rival, Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, garnered 247,655 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.
