Tunji Wusu –
The National Economic Council, NEC, announced on Thursday that the Federal Government has approved a N5 billion grant to each of the federation’s 36 states for grain procurement, as well as five trucks of rice to each state as a palliative for the removal of fuel subsidies.
The NEC also authorized the release of 40,000 sacks of corn to states.
It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide food products to states bordering Niger Republic due to the country’s recent political upheaval.
These were some of the conclusions of the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa’s Council Chamber in Abuja.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State told State House correspondents after the meeting that the approval of N5 billion and trucks of rice and grains were part of measures to bring temporary solutions to the high cost of living caused by the removal of subsidies, while the government continued to work on longer-term programs.
He stated that the states will buy 100,000 sacks of rice and beans, among other things.
According to Zulum, the NEC directed NEMA to distribute food products to states that share borders with Niger Republic.
It is advised that the current security measures be scaled up inside and along the route because of the inherent hazard and the necessity to prevent potential security breaches along the AKTS. In addition, the underlisted counter security is necessary. meProf. Charles Soludo, the governor of the state of Anambra, stated that the social register review was ongoing.
He claimed that the provision of palliatives is being hampered by the fact that Nigeria is already hosting refugees from the Niger Republic.
Senator Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, however, claimed that as opposed to the N5 billion sanctioned, only N2 billion has so far been released to states.
Details to come…Arrangements should be made to thwart any potential dangers.
