By Eppe Franklyne| A friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine at Nature Energy Park in Odense was abandoned on Sunday after reports emerged that Christian Eriksen collapsed during the second half, raising immediate concern among players, officials and supporters.
According to the account of the incident, the Denmark midfielder appeared to clutch his chest before falling to the ground in the 65th minute, prompting an immediate stoppage in play. The Danish football association later stated that Eriksen was conscious, while the match was subsequently called off.
The incident quickly sparked concern because of Eriksen’s well-known medical emergency during Euro 2020. In that tournament, the former Inter Milan player collapsed during Denmark’s group-stage match against Finland in Copenhagen, leading to the suspension of the game.
At the time, teammates and fans watched anxiously as medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to provide emergency treatment. The atmosphere inside Parken Stadium changed dramatically as players formed a protective circle around Eriksen while doctors worked to revive him.
After receiving treatment on the field, Eriksen was taken away on a stretcher, while both teams left the pitch. The match later resumed, with Finland securing a 1-0 victory over Denmark.
Following the 2020 incident, Christian Eriksen spent a week in hospital before returning home to continue his recovery. Doctors fitted him with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device designed to monitor and regulate heart rhythm.
Sunday’s incident immediately brought back memories of that frightening episode, with many supporters expressing concern for the Danish star. The latest update from the Danish football association indicated that Eriksen was conscious following the stoppage.
