Stefano Pioli, the coach of defending champion AC Milan, has had his contract extended by two years as compensation for his title-winning achievements.

The 57-year-old Pioli has signed a new deal with Milan that runs through June 2025, the club announced on Monday. At the conclusion of this season, his prior contract was due to expire.

“AC Milan and Stefano shall continue to work on this ambitious project which symbolizes the club’s history and principles,” Milan stated in the statement. “Having begun this virtuous route, which led to the 2021–22 Serie A title.”

It’s a long cry from the beginning of 2020, when Pioli was only a few months into his position when he nearly lost his job and was replaced by Ralf Rangnick. Before changing its mind, Milan was engaged in extensive negotiations with the German coach.

That decision paid off, as Pioli led Milan to second place in Serie A that year and then improved on it last season by winning the league for the first time in eleven years.

Pioli was also selected Serie A coach of the year despite never having won anything in his managerial career.

Six points behind Serie A leader Napoli in third place is Milan. Additionally, it only needs to avoid losing against Salzburg at home on Wednesday in order to go to the Champions League knockout rounds.
