|By Adejumo Adekunle – United States President Donald Trump has said he asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pull Israeli troops back from Beirut, Lebanon’s capital. Trump also claimed that representatives of Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire against Israeli forces.
The Donald Trump Lebanon ceasefire talks emerged as tensions continued to rise in the region. According to Trump, his discussions with both Israel and Hezbollah helped prevent a wider conflict that could have spread deeper into Beirut.
However, Israel quickly signalled that any restraint would depend on Hezbollah’s actions. Netanyahu’s office said Israel would continue strikes on Beirut if Hezbollah kept targeting Israeli cities and civilians. The statement added that Israeli forces would continue operations in southern Lebanon as planned.
As a result, uncertainty remains over whether the reported diplomatic breakthrough can hold. While Trump described progress, conflicting messages from both sides have left the situation fragile.
Meanwhile, thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews staged protests across Israel against compulsory military service. Demonstrators blocked major roads and disrupted train services in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv area.
The protests brought traffic to a standstill and affected public transport networks. Some protesters carried placards rejecting military service and criticising Zionism.
Military service remains compulsory for most Jewish men and women in Israel. However, ultra-Orthodox communities have long received exemptions that allow many members to pursue religious studies instead of serving in the armed forces.
Those exemptions now face increasing pressure. Israel’s military, which is engaged in multiple security operations, has warned of growing manpower shortages and is seeking to extend mandatory service periods.
The Donald Trump Lebanon ceasefire talks come at a time when regional tensions and domestic political challenges continue to test Israel’s leadership. For now, questions remain over whether diplomacy can ease the conflict or whether further escalation lies ahead.
