Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has been taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after securing his release from Kuje Correctional Centre, intensifying scrutiny around the former minister’s legal troubles.
DSS operatives reportedly picked up Malami moments after he exited the facility, despite having completed all bail conditions imposed by a Federal High Court. The court had, on Wednesday, granted Malami, his wife, and his son bail in the sum of ₦500 million each, with two sureties.
The development followed reports that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) uncovered arms at Malami’s country home in Kebbi State during a search, a discovery that is said to have triggered renewed security interest.
Prior to his release, Malami had raised alarm over an alleged plot by the DSS to re-arrest him from Kuje Prison. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, the former minister accused the DSS of mounting surveillance around the correctional centre with the intention of re-detaining him.
Despite meeting his bail conditions, Malami was reportedly taken away by the secret police, fuelling fresh controversy over the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention. Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement clarifying the grounds for the latest action.
