Edo State Government closes three schools in Akoko-Edo over security concerns

|By Adejumo Adekunle – The Edo State Government closes three schools in Akoko-Edo following intelligence reports warning of a possible kidnap threat targeting students.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School.

In a circular dated 9 June 2026, the State Ministry of Education said the decision followed a security alert issued by the State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The ministry said security agencies reported credible threats to the safety of students, teachers and surrounding communities in parts of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

As a result, authorities suspended all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools with immediate effect.

However, candidates sitting the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will continue to write their examinations. The ministry directed security agencies and community stakeholders to provide strict supervision and protection during the examinations.

The circular, signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary by Enodolomwanyi Otamere, instructed principals to release students safely to their parents and guardians.

In addition, school administrators must secure facilities, maintain communication with education authorities and comply with further government directives.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government urged parents and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.

Officials said efforts are being intensified to protect lives, prevent any attack and restore normal academic activities as soon as possible.
