Ekiti CAC worshippers regain freedom after spending more than two months in captivity following a deadly attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) crusade in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the victims regained their freedom around midnight on Friday, 3 July 2026. They have since been admitted to hospital, where doctors are treating them and assessing their physical and emotional health.
The worshippers were abducted on 28 April 2026 when suspected gunmen stormed an open-air CAC crusade. During the attack, the officiating pastor was killed, while 15 worshippers were taken to an unknown location.
However, Makama said one of the abducted worshippers died while in captivity. As a result, 14 survivors eventually returned home after enduring more than two months in the hands of their captors.
Furthermore, the report described the survivors as being in critical physical and emotional condition. Medical personnel are currently monitoring them as they begin recovery from the traumatic experience.
Meanwhile, authorities have not issued an official statement explaining how the victims were released. Likewise, security agencies have not identified those responsible for the attack or announced any arrests.
The incident has renewed concerns about security at religious gatherings in parts of Nigeria. Community leaders and residents continue to urge security agencies to strengthen protection for places of worship and ensure those behind the attack face justice.
The Ekiti CAC worshippers regain freedom story marks the end of a long and painful ordeal for the survivors and their families. Nevertheless, questions remain over the circumstances surrounding the attack and the victims’ release as investigations continue.
