The Kogi East Elders Council (KEEC), an Igala organization, has demanded that the state’s governorship election, scheduled for November 11, be postponed.

The council stated that the election should be postponed because of the violence and fatalities in the state in a statement released on Thursday by Alphonsus K. Alhassan, the secretary of the political committee.

The elders also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to install an administrator to manage the government’s operations in Kogi until order is restored and a state of emergency is declared.

The council claims that in order to guarantee that the next election is credible, fair, and free, a state of emergency is required.

Parts of the statement said: “There is a much that needs improvement in Kogi State, and Kogi East specifically. We cannot stand by while someone continuously terrorizes, persecutes, and massacres our people in the name of politics. We are sick and tired of this animalistic behavior.

The elders further requested that the Navy Commander NU Akalezi, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, be promptly redeployed out of Kogi State, claiming that they had been corrupted.

IGP Egebtokun Investigates Anyigba Killings While in Kogi
A probe into Tuesday’s violent event at Anyigba in Kogi State’s Dekina Local Government Area has been opened, according to Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

This was said by the police chief on Thursday during a courtesy call with Governor Yahaya Bello at the state capital of Lokoja’s Government House.

According to Egbetokun, the police authority was not pleased with the isolated incidents of pre-election violence that had already been reported in the state and that appropriate measures were being taken to stop additional violence before, during, and after the election.
“It seems like an operational error, though not definitive, but an investigation will reveal what happened,” he stated. I want to guarantee that throughout the election, the police would remain impartial and carry out their duty.
