The bodies of a couple murdered in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have been interred.

Kehinde and Oluwabukunola Fatinoye were assassinated early Sunday morning at their Government Reservation Area (GRA) property in Ibara, Abeokuta, after returning from a crossing to a New Year’s church ceremony. Their murderers also set fire to their bodies and kidnapped their son and housemaid.

On Tuesday, the burial service was held at Christ Anglican Church in the town’s Iporo-Ake neighborhood. It was led by S.K Oyewale and attended by several family members and sympathisers. The congregation commandeered the entire church and grounds.

Funke Fadugba, Chairman, Editorial Board of Penpushing Media, led some members of the organization to the service and also paid a sympathy visit to a member of the family, Ambrose Somide, General Manager Radio Services of Daar Communications.

The deceased’s families and sympathizers could not hold back their tears during the burial ritual and interment, as many cursed their as-yet unknown perpetrators.

Mr Fatinoye was a former Central Bank of Nigeria employee, and his wife worked at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB).

Their kid is also suspected of being murdered and his body thrown into a river near the state capital’s Adigbe-Obada axis, but the body has yet to be recovered at the time of reporting this article.

After the church service, the couple’s bodies were brought in separate white caskets to a cemetery in the Lantoro neighborhood of Abeokuta, where they were dedicated to mother earth.

The officiating minister demanded justice for their assassination.

Mr Oyewale read from 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18, and the hymns included ‘Forever with the Lord,’ ‘Who are the like stars appearing,’ and ‘On the resurrection Morning.’

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police spokeswoman, said the police had arrested a suspect and that the investigation was underway.

“The incident occurred shortly after 12 a.m. It is true that a couple was murdered and set on fire at their Abeokuta home immediately after they returned from Cross over Service. This is an obvious instance of assassination, and we will not stop until we find out who is responsible. Our agents have apprehended one person in connection with the event. “We will get to the bottom of this because an investigation has already commenced,” Mr Oyeyemi said.
