Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has tipped Brazil as the team to beat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while identifying Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal as the side capable of stopping the South American giants.

Ferguson said Brazil’s pedigree, depth of talent and footballing culture place them firmly among the leading contenders for the global showpiece. He added that the appointment of former Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, further strengthens Brazil’s chances of lifting the trophy.

Speaking to Press Box PR, the legendary coach reflected on his experience working with Brazilian footballers during his time at Manchester United, citing former Red Devils defenders and twins, Rafael and Fabio da Silva, as examples of Brazil’s enduring quality.

“Portugal have got good players. I always think of Brazil at the World Cup. The Brazilian players—I had the two young lads, twins, Rafael and Fabio,” Ferguson said.

He stressed that Brazil remain the benchmark at the tournament, adding that any team capable of eliminating them would likely go on to win the competition.

“I think whoever beats Brazil will win the World Cup,” he stated.

Brazil will be aiming to reclaim the title they last won in 2002, following Argentina’s dramatic victory over France at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a final dominated by Paris Saint-Germain stars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
