The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) has approved the appointment of Barrister Yahaya Yakubu Shafa as Acting Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, marking a new phase in the administrative leadership of the court.
The decision, announced Tuesday in Abuja, takes effect from February 17, 2026. The Commission ratified the appointment at its 98th meeting held on January 22, 2026, clearing the way for Shafa to assume one of the most strategic administrative positions in the federal judiciary.
Shafa’s emergence follows the elevation of the outgoing Chief Registrar, Sulaiman Amida Hassan, to the Bench of the Federal High Court as a Judge. His appointment created the vacancy that necessitated swift action by the Commission to sustain institutional stability within the court system.
In a statement issued by the Court’s Director of Information, Dr. Catherine Oby Christopher, the judiciary emphasized that the appointment underscores its resolve to preserve continuity, efficiency, and operational stability in its administrative structure. The statement stressed that maintaining seamless leadership within the registry remains critical to supporting judicial officers and ensuring timely case management across divisions of the court.
Shafa brings more than 18 years of experience in the justice sector to the role. Described as a seasoned judicial administrator and legal practitioner, he has built a reputation for institutional coordination, policy implementation, and administrative reform within the judiciary.
Before his elevation, Shafa served as Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Judicial Service Commission, where he spearheaded judicial administration processes and strengthened policy coordination mechanisms. During his tenure, he played a central role in driving institutional development initiatives aimed at enhancing procedural efficiency and governance within the state’s judicial framework.
Judicial observers note that his combined background in court administration and legal practice positions him to reinforce the operational backbone of the Federal High Court. His experience in institutional reform is expected to fortify internal systems, streamline registry procedures, and support the broader objective of expediting justice delivery nationwide.
The Federal High Court occupies a critical place in Nigeria’s judicial architecture, handling high-stakes matters ranging from constitutional disputes to financial crimes and federal revenue cases. As Acting Chief Registrar, Shafa will oversee administrative coordination, supervise registry operations, and ensure compliance with procedural standards that underpin effective case management.
The Court expressed appreciation to Hassan for his service as Chief Registrar and wished him success in his new role on the Bench. It also extended best wishes to Shafa as he assumes his responsibilities, expressing confidence that his leadership will sustain and deepen administrative excellence within the Federal High Court.
With the appointment now in force, attention turns to how the new Acting Chief Registrar will consolidate existing reforms and introduce fresh administrative strategies to enhance efficiency across the court’s nationwide divisions.
