Tunji Wusu –

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Central Naval Command, Rear Adm. Umar Chugali, has issued a warning to criminals to stop stealing crude oil and committing other crimes in the maritime sector.
Chugali warned that the Navy would not tolerate criminals destroying the country’s economic resources during his first familiarization visit to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) on Monday in Warri.

At the naval facility in Warri, the FOC was welcomed by Commodore Chindo Yahaya, Commander, NNS Delta.

The Nigerian Navy is resolved to stop crude oil theft in the marine realm, the FOC told reporters shortly after touring the facilities at the naval station.

“Let me reiterate that criminals damaging the country’s economic assets will not be tolerated by the Nigerian Navy or other security services operating in the maritime space.

“Anyone engaging in illicit activity while working in a maritime setting won’t have a place to hide.

He declared, “We are going all out to make sure that not a drop of crude oil is missed. The Commander is ready, the platforms are ready, and the morale of the officers and troops is strong.

Chugali added that in order to effectively prevent crude oil theft, the Navy would continue to work with stakeholders such as the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operations Delta Safe (OPDS), host communities, and others.

“We are working together and in concert with all stakeholders—not just the security agencies—to form an effective barrier where illegal activities will not flourish in the maritime environment,” he said.

Speaking about the ongoing burning of crude oil that had been seized and other items, the FOC claimed that the Navy was acting in accordance with the established “Standard Operating Procedures” (SOP).

He went on to say that the existing SOP was highly effective and that likely new strategies might be developed in the future.

“Standard Operating Procedures have been delivered to us. after carefully examining all environmental factors.

“For the time being, it has been found that the best course of action is to make sure that these creatures don’t exist.

The SOP and current regulations are being followed by all navy troops and units, Chugali said, adding that it may be revised later.

Chugali was pleased with the amenities and staff’s behavior during his first visit.

He stated that they were prepared to carry out their duties by making sure that there are no criminal activities taking place in the marine area.
