Canada-based Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Foluwasegun Sanni, widely known as Folucious FC, has revealed the uphill challenges African artists in the diaspora face as they strive to earn recognition in the global Afrobeats scene.
In an exclusive interview, the fast-rising Afrofusion star described the experience as a “double struggle”—staying true to African roots while adapting to the complex dynamics of foreign music markets.
“The Afrobeat sound is global now, but not every artist in the diaspora gets equal visibility,” Folucious FC explained. “Back home, you’re sometimes seen as too foreign, while abroad, people don’t fully grasp the depth of where the music comes from. It’s a balancing act that takes consistency and real passion.”
The Nigerian-born artist, whose sound blends Afrobeats, hip-hop, and soul, highlighted the limited opportunities for live performances, high production expenses, and scarce label representation as major hurdles for African creatives abroad.
Despite these setbacks, Folucious FC remains upbeat, acknowledging that digital platforms have created new avenues for global exposure and connection.
“Technology has made it possible for us to reach fans in Lagos, Accra, London, or Toronto with just one post. Once the music is real, people will feel it anywhere,” he added.
Having grown up in Lagos before relocating to Canada, Folucious FC said his artistry reflects a blend of Lagos street grit and North American polish. His upcoming project, slated for release later this year, will further explore this cultural and sonic fusion.
“My journey is about representing every African artist abroad trying to be heard. We may be far from home, but Afrobeat lives in us. It’s our heartbeat,” he affirmed.
