Ghana has climbed to sixth place among the world’s leading gold-producing countries, recording an unprecedented 185 tonnes in 2025 and moving ahead of the United States.
The latest global gold production ranking places China first with 385 tonnes, followed by Russia with 345 tonnes, Australia with 293 tonnes, Canada with 213 tonnes and Peru with 209 tonnes. Ghana follows with 185 tonnes, while the US ranks seventh with 157 tonnes.
The Ghana Chamber of Mines said the country produced 5.94 million ounces of gold in 2025, about 185 tonnes. This marked a 23.41 per cent increase from the 4.82 million ounces produced in 2024.
Christopher Nyarko, Director of Analysis, Research and Finance at the Ghana Chamber of Mines, confirmed Ghana’s improved position during an interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV. He explained that rising domestic output coincided with weaker US production, partly because of technical problems in Nevada, which accounts for about 64 per cent of American output.
Small-scale mining played the biggest role in Ghana’s record year. The sector contributed 52.4 per cent of total national gold output, overtaking large-scale mining for the first time in more than a century of commercial gold production.
Large-scale mining, meanwhile, declined by about 3 per cent, falling from 2.92 million ounces in 2024 to 2.83 million ounces in 2025.
Experts attributed the rise in small-scale output to policy reforms, stronger market integration and the creation of the Ghana Gold Board in 2025 to formalise small-scale gold trading.
The chamber expects Ghana gold production to reach between 6.1 million and 6.7 million ounces in 2026, further strengthening the country’s position as Africa’s leading gold producer.
