Mexico has honoured football legend Pelé with a massive new monument. A giant tribute to the Brazilian national team icon now stands in the city of Guadalajara. The impressive artwork celebrates his historic sporting achievements before the upcoming World Cup tournament begins.

The famous forward passed away at the age of 82 back in 2022. He famously won one of his three global titles right here in Mexico during the 1970 competition. Local leader Pablo Lemus shared his excitement about the project. He noted that “This monumental figure of this great player, who played here and scored a great goal, is a great gift to the people of Jalisco and to all visitors,” Jalisco Gov. Pablo Lemus said. “Pelé loved Guadalajara, and the Brazilian national team fell in love with it because the Mexican public gave them everything in 1970.”

The giant structure rises 9.5 metres into the air. Fans can find it in Plaza Brazil, a public square situated just outside the famous Jalisco Stadium. This historic venue previously hosted exciting matches during both the 1970 and 1986 tournaments. During their golden 1970 run, the Brazilian national team played their early group games, the quarterfinal, and the semifinal at this very ground. They then lifted the trophy after beating Italy at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

The area expects plenty of football fans to visit the fresh landmark. “People who come to the Jalisco Stadium now will stop to take pictures. This statue will be a landmark, especially since it depicts a football star like Pelé,” Lemus said. “It’s a great gift for the World Cup.” The venue will soon host four opening-round group matches, featuring teams like South Korea, Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay.
