Borussia Monchengladbach defeated 10-man Bayern Munich 3-2 on Saturday to extend its unbeaten streak against the Bundesliga champion to a club record fifth straight game in all competitions and give its opponent a tenuous lead in the standings.
After suffering its second Bundesliga loss of the year, Bayern, who had just won 1-0 against Paris St. Germain in the Round of 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, now trails second-place Union Berlin by just one point.
Bayern had a disastrous start after Dayot Upamecano brought down Alassane Plea outside the box and was sent off for his last-man foul in the eighth minute. Gladbach then took the lead through Lars Stindl in the 13th minute.
Stindl had a perfect opportunity to extend his team’s lead in the 24th minute, but he squandered it by shooting wide when he could have tapped the ball in from close range.
With Alphonso Davies running down the wing with breathtaking speed and cutting back for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to tuck in the equalizer with his eighth league goal this season, Bayern maintained pressing forward and was rewarded in the 35th minute.
After the break, Bayern nearly tied the score on a shot by Joshua Kimmich, but Gladbach outplayed the outmatched visitors’ defense with a fast passing move, and Jonas Hofmann finished it off in the 55th minute.
Marcus Thuram, who came on as a substitute, secured all three points by capping off a very identical move down the right before Mathys Tel restored Bayern’s lead in stoppage time.
