Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State said he is under pressure from political stakeholders to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He addressed the issue at an event at the Government House Banquet Hall in Jos, where he emphasised his commitment to remaining in the PDP, saying only God and the electorate who voted for him could authorise any change in his political affiliation.
Mutfwang dismissed claims that he had initiated discussions to join the APC, and challenged members of the audience to confirm whether they had asked him to leave the PDP — the crowd responded with a collective “No.”
He also noted that a faction within the APC in Plateau State has actively lobbied for his defection, believing that 60-70 per cent of the APC base in the state would welcome him. Yet he reiterated that such overtures would not sway his decision.
Mutfwang’s remarks come amid a backdrop of several governors leaving the PDP for the APC following the 2023 elections, heightening speculation about further defections ahead of 2027.
