The country’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has approved the redeployment of two police commissioners to Kano just days before the presidential and national assembly elections.
The new CPs are Ita Lazurus Uko-Udom and Muhammad Yakubu, who succeed CP Dauda Mamman who has been transferred to Plateau state. While CP Uko-Udom would keep an eye on the central senatorial district of Kano, CP Yakubu acquired the role of substantive and coordinating CP.
Three deputy commissioners of police DCP were also deployed, according to a statement by the command in Kano’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, to staff various strategic and hotspot locations throughout the state.
DCP Abaniwonda S. Olufemi and DCP Abdulkadir El-Jamal are the new senior officers, and they will oversee the Kano South Senatorial District and Kano North Senatorial District, respectively, for the 2023 General Election.
A member of the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) raised the alert about the alleged unlawful arrest and incarceration of over 100 party members less than 48 hours prior to the announcement of the new position.
To ensure a fair poll in the state and to avert widespread protests, the party demanded the urgent deployment of CP Dauda Mamman from Kano.
Although former Kano CP Mamman denied the NNPP’s claims before his abrupt reassignment to Plateau state and instead promised to put the security of people and property first, the appointment of the new senior officers would not be distant from the simmering political tension and violence in recent days.
