Hipgnosis Songs Capital has purchased Justin Bieber’s song catalog, according to a press release issued today. The catalog was sold for more than $200 million, according to Billboard and Variety. Hipgnosis formally acquired Bieber’s publishing copyrights, master recordings, and adjacent rights for his back catalog. The transaction represents Hipgnosis’ largest music-rights acquisition to date.

Hipgnosis acquired a 50% stake in Neil Young’s songwriting catalog in 2021. Leonard Cohen’s estate sold the entirety of his songwriting catalog to Hipgnosis the following year. The financial terms of both acquisitions have not been disclosed. Justin Timberlake also sold his song catalog to Hipgnosis last year for a reported price of just over $100 million.

Universal Music Publishing, which paid more than $300 million for the publishing rights to Bob Dylan’s entire catalog in 2020, is another player in the catalog acquisition game. Following that agreement, Dylan paid Sony Music Entertainment $200 million for the master rights to his recorded music catalog. Sony also acquired Bruce Springsteen’s masters and publishing catalog for a reported $550 million in late 2021.

Some artists in larger groups have sold stock in their band’s catalog. Julian Casablancas sold his stake in the Strokes’ catalog to Primary Wave, while Chuck D of Public Enemy sold a large portion of his songwriting catalog to his longtime publisher Reach Music.
