The Kano State Government has directed all public office holders intending to contest in the 2026 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was contained in an official circular dated March 24, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
The circular, addressed to commissioners, special advisers, directors-general, and other senior government appointees, stated that the decision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and other regulations guiding the conduct of public officers.
According to the government, all political appointees seeking elective positions must step down from their current roles to comply with legal requirements governing participation in partisan politics.
The directive specifically enforces Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, which regulates the involvement of public servants in political activities, ensuring that the integrity of public service is maintained.
The government noted that the move is also designed to uphold the core values of the civil service, including neutrality, accountability, and professionalism.
“All public officers who are interested in contesting in the forthcoming general elections are requested to resign or retire, as the case may be, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the circular stated.
Authorities were further instructed to ensure the directive is widely disseminated and strictly complied with across all government institutions in the state.
