The Karim-Lamido attacks have left several people dead after suspected armed militia launched coordinated raids across communities in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The Karim-Lamido attacks began three days ago in Didango village, where gunmen ambushed youths returning from an English Premier League viewing centre. Two young men were killed in the first wave of violence.
Shortly after, the violence escalated. Residents reported that the Karim-Lamido attacks spread rapidly to Gaita, Loba, and Lewatha villages. Consequently, hundreds of villagers fled into nearby bushes for safety as panic gripped the area.
A resident of Mayo-Gauro, Dauda Bulus, said the assaults appeared coordinated. He alleged that armed men from a neighbouring community carried out the raids. According to him, repeated Karim-Lamido attacks have devastated the area over the years.
Meanwhile, another resident from Didango claimed farmers were ambushed while returning from their fields. Several people sustained injuries in the process.
In addition, sources revealed that attackers attempted another raid on Gurum village near Kodai on Tuesday night. However, local vigilante groups repelled the assault after intensifying patrols due to ongoing insecurity.
Abubakar Adamu, a community member, expressed concern over the continued violence. He warned that the recurring Karim-Lamido attacks threaten peace and stability in the region. He also noted that despite peace meetings and dialogue efforts, the violence has persisted.
Furthermore, residents say the attacks often coincide with farming seasons, disrupting livelihoods and worsening food insecurity in the area.
Security authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Meanwhile, the exact number of casualties remains unclear as investigations continue.
