On Sunday, LeBron James became only the second player in NBA history to reach 38,000 career points, closing in on Kareem Abdul-all-time Jabbar’s mark.

James, who is in his 20th NBA season, needed 11 points to reach 38,000 points and did so in the first quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

James eventually finished with 35 points, but the Lakers were defeated 113-112 on the night.

This season, the 38-year-old forward, who began his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers and has also played for the Miami Heat, has averaged 29 points per game.

James, a four-time champion and four-time MVP, is on pace to break Abdul-34-year-old Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points in the coming weeks.

Last month, when James turned 38, Abdul-Jabbar wished him a happy birthday with the message, “38 is the new 38,388.”

James is now 363 points behind Abdul-Jabbar, and NBA analysts believe he will break the record before the All-Star break next month, based on his scoring average.
