-Delta, Abia, Ebonyi top chart with highest refill rates
-Yobe, Lagos, Kebbi record cheapest prices in May
The cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, surged to an average of ₦20,709.11 in May 2025, marking a 2.18% increase from the ₦20,268.06 recorded in April.
This was disclosed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest LPG Price Watch report released on Wednesday. The report presents a detailed breakdown of gas refill prices across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the data, Delta State led the chart with the highest average refill price at ₦23,356.56, followed closely by Abia (₦22,953.01) and Ebonyi (₦22,943.30). In contrast, the most affordable refill prices were reported in Yobe (₦18,500), Lagos (₦18,536), and Kebbi (₦18,606.60), indicating a wide disparity in the cost of domestic energy across regions.
On a year-on-year basis, the price of cooking gas has jumped significantly. In May 2024, the average price to refill a 12.5kg cylinder was ₦15,627.40. This represents a steep 32% increase in just one year, highlighting the growing burden on households and small businesses grappling with rising energy costs.
Although the figures for June 2025 are yet to be released by the NBS, analysts predict a potential further increase, citing inflationary pressures and logistics challenges affecting product distribution across the country.
Stakeholders have called for urgent intervention by relevant authorities to stabilize the market and improve affordability, especially as the rainy season further complicates energy access in many parts of Nigeria.
