The family of the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, has barred his widow, Omowunmi, from using their surname, Aloba, pending the outcome of a DNA test to confirm the paternity of their son, Liam.

The decision, announced in an official statement signed by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, intensifies the ongoing paternity dispute surrounding Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023. The controversy began after the singer died following an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse—an incident that triggered widespread public outcry and led to the exhumation of his body for autopsy.

In May 2025, the investigation hit a major setback when pathologists declared that the cause of Mohbad’s death could not be determined.

In the new statement, the family argued that Omowunmi was not legally married to Mohbad, stressing that no statutory or traditional union took place. According to them, “the required Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price, were never completed.”

The family also appointed Oladayo Ogungbe as their sole legal representative for all matters related to the DNA case and the late singer’s estate. They confirmed that lawyer Wahab Shittu will continue handling all issues concerning the ongoing investigation into Mohbad’s death.

They noted that both Wunmi and the child would be fully included in the administration of the late singer’s estate—but only if the DNA test verifies Liam as Mohbad’s biological son.
