-Firm deepens gas use in transport sector
-Targets affordable energy and low-carbon footprint
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has presented 35 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to the federal government’s Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), in a strategic move to advance Nigeria’s transition to cleaner and more affordable energy.
The presentation ceremony took place on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, where the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, handed over the buses to the CEO of Pi-CNG, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi.
The company disclosed the development in a statement posted on its official X account, describing it as a major step in the national drive to deepen gas utilisation across sectors, especially in public transportation.
“This milestone reflects a bold step towards reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint, enhancing energy security, and providing long-term socio-economic benefits for Nigerians,” NNPC Ltd. said.
It added that the gesture underscores its “strategic commitment” to supporting the federal government’s goal of promoting gas-powered transportation and scaling the national gas expansion programme.
Ojulari, during the handover, noted that the initiative aligns with the company’s broader vision of powering Nigeria’s future through sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
Receiving the buses, Oluwagbemi lauded the state-owned oil firm for what he called a “game-changing intervention,” noting that the donation will fast-track the deployment of gas-powered mass transit systems and ease the cost of transportation for Nigerians.
NNPC Ltd. said it will continue to leverage partnerships to lead energy transition efforts and drive investments in alternative fuel technologies, as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.
The Presidential Initiative on CNG, launched in 2023, is part of the government’s plan to provide cleaner energy alternatives and reduce dependence on petrol, amid ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s energy sector.
