The Boniface Aniebonam-led faction of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has challenged Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to formally resign his membership if he intends to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The faction’s Kano State Chairman, Senator Masu’d el Jilbreen Doguwa, issued the warning on Tuesday while addressing journalists at a press conference in Kano, insisting that the governor remains a bona fide member of the NNPP.
Doguwa said the party has not received any official communication indicating Yusuf’s resignation, stressing that party rules must be followed if he plans to leave. He maintained that respect for due process is non-negotiable.
“Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a member of the NNPP, and as party members, we owe him respect. However, if he intends to defect to another party, he must follow due process,” Doguwa said.
He explained that the governor is required to submit a formal resignation letter to the NNPP chairman at his ward level, noting that no such letter has been received.
Doguwa also dismissed claims that former Kano State Governor and NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, remains the national leader of the party. He cited three court judgments affirming the Aniebonam-led leadership, including rulings by Justice M.A. Hassan and Justice Bello Kawu of the Abuja High Court, as well as Justice C.U. Okoroafor of the Abia High Court.
According to Doguwa, Kwankwaso lost his status as a major stakeholder in the party after the 2023 general elections, despite contesting the presidential race on the NNPP platform.
He added that the NNPP in Kano State remains open to individuals who wish to retain their membership but will not accommodate groups seeking to operate within the party under the banner of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
