Nigeria’s quest for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title gathered fresh momentum on Monday night as the Super Eagles delivered a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique in Morocco to seal a quarter-final spot.
Victor Osimhen struck twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams added a goal apiece as Nigeria swept aside the Mambas in their Round of 16 clash in Fes. The emphatic win extended the Super Eagles’ perfect run at the tournament and underlined their growing authority in Morocco.
Eric Chelle’s side will now face the winner of Tuesday’s Round of 16 encounter between Algeria and DR Congo in Saturday’s quarter-final in Marrakech.
Nigeria entered the knockout fixture on the back of three group-stage wins, beating Tanzania 2–1, Tunisia 3–2 and Uganda 3–1. Their latest performance further highlighted a steady upward curve in form and cohesion.
Against Mozambique, the Super Eagles controlled proceedings, dominating possession with 62 per cent, firing 21 shots and earning five corner-kicks. The Mambas managed just two shots on target, enjoyed 38 per cent possession and failed to register a single corner.
The attacking trio of Osimhen, Lookman and Adams once again stole the spotlight, combining fluently and accounting for all four goals. Adams supplied two assists—setting up Lookman and Osimhen—before capping his performance with a goal of his own. Lookman, in turn, repaid the favour by teeing up Osimhen for his second strike, a sequence that reflected the growing chemistry within Nigeria’s frontline.
Reacting after the match, Dawaki Rangers head coach, Audu Ojo, praised the Super Eagles for their work rate, tactical discipline and attacking efficiency.
“The boys really showed hard work and dedication. With what I saw against Mozambique, I believe the Super Eagles have the quality to compete for the title,” Ojo told DAILY POST.
He noted a clear improvement from the group stage to the knockout round, highlighting progress across all departments.
“From their first game against Tanzania to the Round of 16 match against Mozambique, they have improved in defence, midfield and attack. I am particularly impressed with the attack line. Osimhen, Lookman and Akor really proved they can break any team’s defence,” he said.
Ojo also singled out midfielder Alex Iwobi for praise, commending his vision and incisive passing.
“I want to give Iwobi kudos for his creativity. His through balls really broke Mozambique’s defence,” he added, while also applauding the backline for keeping a clean sheet.
With confidence building and momentum firmly on their side, Nigeria will head into the quarter-finals believing they can overcome either Algeria or DR Congo and keep their AFCON title ambitions firmly on track.
