A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has reaffirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party amid growing speculation over his political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
The faction said Jonathan recently participated in the party’s digital membership registration exercise and personally completed his registration in his ward.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the group dismissed campaign posters circulating on social media linking the former president to other political parties.
The faction described the materials as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard suggestions that Jonathan had defected from the PDP.
According to the statement, some of the posters portray Jonathan as a presidential candidate, while others pair him with different politicians as potential running mates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group maintained that Jonathan remains a duly registered member of the PDP under the Turaki-led faction and said the former president reaffirmed his membership during a recent meeting with the party’s interim National Working Committee.
The faction said the clarification became necessary because Nigerian law prohibits an individual from belonging to more than one political party at the same time.
It also alleged that some individuals might attempt to secretly register Jonathan and other politicians in multiple political parties without their consent.
The group subsequently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the general public to disregard any alleged registration records or campaign materials associating Jonathan with any political party outside the PDP.
