Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has pledged to champion economic reforms aimed at improving the welfare of residents of the Federal Capital Territory if elected senator in the 2027 elections.

Yesufu made the pledge in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Sunday, where she outlined key components of what she described as the Abuja Residents Empowerment Bill.

The co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement said the proposed legislation would ensure that residents “enjoy the dividends of their sweat” through policies targeted at economic inclusion and social protection.

According to her, the Bill would reserve quotas for youth-led and women-led businesses in government contracts within the FCT.

She also said the proposed legislation would include rent control measures designed to shield residents from arbitrary increases in housing costs.

“The Rent Control component of my Bill will protect you from unjust rent hikes. Double taxation elimination, Skills Empowerment spending that empowers Abuja residents with real skills,” she wrote.

Yesufu further stated that the Bill would create access to capital for residents by mandating that part of taxes generated in Abuja be channelled into micro-loan schemes for small businesses.

“Access to Capital mandates that ensure a portion of Abuja taxes is used to provide micro-loans to support businesses,” she added.
