The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman was shot by gunmen in Ogbaku Ward, Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, in southeast Nigeria.
Charles Oke, the victim, was shot on Saturday night at his home in the neighborhood of Umunomo Nsokpo.
According to reports, the gunmen ambushed the PDP chairman as he entered his home unnoticed at around 9 p.m.
According to accounts, Mr. Oke was shot in one of his legs.
According to reports, the attackers scaled a perimeter fence to get inside his home.
According to sources, the victim received emergency medical care at an unnamed hospital.
Collins Opuruozor, the PDP’s state spokesperson, verified the event when he was reached.
The specifics of the attack would be made public as soon as feasible, according to Mr. Opuruozor, who said that the party in charge of the state was on top of the matter.
Henry Okoye, the Imo State police spokesperson, claimed that an inquiry had been launched to find the assailants.
According to Mr. Okoye, an assistant superintendent of police, “Patrols within the region have been reinforced with the intention of nipping in the bud any adverse circumstance.”
Imo State has experienced a decline in security, similar to other states in the southeast of Nigeria, as a result of a rise of armed assailants.
Attacks frequently target government personnel, security agencies, and facilities.
In less than two weeks, militants in the state shot and killed a Nigerian judge during a court hearing.
About three weeks ago, gunmen decapitated the only administrator of the state’s Ideato North Local Government Area.
Gunmen who stormed the Oguta Divisional Police Headquarters in the state’s Oguta Local Government Area in late January killed a police officer.
Midway through January, gunmen assaulted the Agwa Vigilante Group in the Agwa Community of the same Oguta Council Area of the state and were thought to be members of the illegal Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Police officers who stopped the attack murdered three alleged IPOB members.
The IPOB has been blamed by the Nigerian government for the deadly attacks in the area. However, the gang has consistently denied taking part in the attacks.
Leading the call for the separation of the South-east and some regions of the South-South of Nigeria from Nigeria is IPOB, which seeks to create an independent state of Biafra.
