By Babatunji Wusu| The Nigeria Police Force has launched a nationwide enforcement drive against the use of unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed number plates, following growing concerns over public safety and security.
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, described the practice as illegal and reckless, warning that it poses a serious risk to the country. He explained that criminals often exploit vehicles without proper identification to avoid detection and escape accountability. As a result, the police have decided to take stronger action against offenders.
According to the police, enforcement begins immediately across all commands nationwide. Officers have received clear instructions to stop and impound any vehicle operating without valid registration or displaying altered, hidden, or defaced registration numbers.
“Every vehicle operating on our roads must be properly registered and must display its approved registration number in accordance with the law. Any vehicle found without number plates or with deliberately obscured, concealed, or tampered registration number will be stopped, impounded, and subjected to the appropriate legal process.”
The force emphasised that vehicle registration enforcement goes beyond routine administration. It serves as an essential tool for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and national security. The police noted that kidnappers, criminals, and other offenders frequently depend on untraceable vehicles to carry out unlawful activities.
To strengthen compliance, all Commissioners of Police, tactical commanders, and heads of formations have been directed to intensify operations across the country. The force also made it clear that vehicle registration enforcement will apply to everyone equally, with no room for favouritism or selective treatment.
As the campaign gathers momentum, the police urged motorists to ensure their vehicles meet all legal registration requirements. The force reiterated that vehicle registration enforcement remains a key part of efforts to improve security and maintain order on Nigerian roads.
