A lecturer at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, who is accused of raping a 20-year-old student at the institution, has been detained by the Lagos Police Department.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution was named in the arrest warrant, which was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunmi, via the state High Court.
The student, whose name has been concealed, claimed that the incident happened when she went to the lecturer’s office to resolve a problem with her test results.
According to a non-governmental organization, Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, where the victim filed the allegation, the lecturer allegedly raped the undergraduate on August 16, 2023, instead of addressing her exam-related concerns.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police’s public relations officer, verified the occurrence and stated that “He is to appear in court in the coming days.”
Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, a spokesman for UNILAG, responded by stating that the university was aware of an investigation involving one of its employees.
She stated, “On August 28, UNILAG Management got a notice from the Nigeria Police Force inviting a university employee for questioning. The employee was notified of the situation and given instructions to follow right away.
“The employee complied on August 29. We are working with security agencies to ensure that the case is resolved in the interest of justice even though we are not yet aware of all the specifics surrounding the incident that resulted in the employee’s arrest.
