Nigerian rising star, Qing Madi, has decried the harsh realities facing women in the country’s music industry, insisting that the space remains unfriendly and unsupportive to female talents.
The American Love crooner, speaking on a recent episode of the Wahala Podcast, said female musicians are forced to work twice as hard as their male counterparts while receiving little recognition.
“The industry is not the best for women in terms of protecting women, loving women in general,” she said. “Women are oftentimes criticised for nothing, but men are free to do whatever they like. Society just wants to box women so much.”
The 19-year-old singer stressed that despite her young age, she already feels the weight of unfair scrutiny that women in the industry endure. She added that she remains proud of herself and other female artists who continue to thrive despite the challenges.
“It’s not easy being a female artist in Nigeria, and that’s why I’m super proud of every woman holding it down,” Qing Madi said.
