The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, in a decisive move that signals a potential end to the protracted political standoff in the state.

The lawmakers adopted a motion to suspend the impeachment process on Thursday during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt. The resolution effectively puts on hold weeks of heightened political tension that had gripped the oil-rich state.

The decision follows high-level intervention by President Bola Tinubu, who recently convened a closed-door meeting with Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and key leaders of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The presidential mediation appears to have brokered a truce among the feuding political actors.

The impeachment threat had deepened divisions within the state’s political structure, raising concerns about governance stability and legislative-executive relations. However, Thursday’s resolution by the Assembly suggests a strategic de-escalation and a willingness among stakeholders to restore political calm.

Observers say the suspension of the impeachment proceedings may pave the way for reconciliation and a reset of working relationships between the executive and the legislature.

While it remains unclear whether the truce will translate into long-term political stability, the Assembly’s latest action indicates that the immediate crisis has been contained.
