Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday announced their decision to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, escalating the deepening political crisis in the state.

The declaration was made during an ongoing press conference in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers accused the governor of actions they described as incompatible with constitutional governance, although specific allegations were not immediately detailed.

The move follows weeks of heightened tension between the executive and the legislature, marked by sharp disagreements that have paralysed governance and fuelled public anxiety across the state. The face-off has steadily intensified, with both sides trading accusations amid failed attempts at reconciliation.

Friday’s announcement signals a decisive shift by the Assembly, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle that could reshape Rivers State’s power structure in the coming days.

Observers say the impeachment push is likely to test constitutional limits, party loyalties, and the resilience of democratic institutions in the state as events continue to unfold.
