Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has explained why he prefers rapping in his native Twi rather than English, saying he feels inferior whenever he performs in English.

The award-winning musician made the disclosure during a recent appearance on The Fuse, where he discussed his choice of language and how it influences his music.

Sarkodie said he initially started his rap career performing in English. However, he later switched to Twi because he felt more confident and comfortable expressing himself in his mother tongue.

According to him, rapping in Twi allows him to communicate emotions more effectively and gives him a stronger sense of identity as an artiste.

He described the language as his greatest strength, saying it helps him express himself without limitations.

“Rapping in Twi is my superpower. I express myself way better in my mother’s tongue. The emotions I want to put out come out best when I rap in my native language,” he said.

Sarkodie also explained that performing in English made him feel inferior to other rappers. He said the experience changed when he began using Twi, as he felt confident enough to compete with any rapper around the world.

“I started rapping in English but felt like I was beneath someone when I rap in English. But when I rap in Twi, I feel equal to any other rapper in the world,” he added.

His comments highlight the role of indigenous languages in music and artistic expression.

Sarkodie, widely recognised as one of Ghana’s leading hip-hop artistes, has built much of his musical identity around Twi.

His explanation also draws attention to how musicians use their native languages to connect with audiences and communicate cultural experiences.
