Tunji Wusu –
After the Eid al-Kabir holiday, the Senate is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday.
As the upper chamber returns, majority and minority leaders are anticipated to show their cards, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
It is anticipated that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would provide the minority leader, while the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has the most members, will create the majority leader.
According to NAN, the PDP has 36 senators, compared to the 59 senators held by the APC, as well as eight from the Labour Party, two from the Social Democratic Party, two from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, one from the Young Peoples Party, and one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
This demonstrates that the 10th Senate is made up of senators from seven political parties, with 50 of them representing the opposition.
The eight empty principle positions are also anticipated to be filled by the minority caucus and the governing APC.
The four key posts allocated for the minority caucus are minority leader, deputy minority leader, minority whip, and deputy minority whip. While the APC is anticipated to produce the majority leader, deputy majority leader, chief whip, and deputy chief whip.
The minority leader, deputy leader, minority whip, and deputy minority whip are all likely to come from PDP, which is the main opposition party.
The political parties having the majority of senate seats are solely responsible for nominating candidates for the slots.
According to NAN’s research, Sens. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti) and Mohammed Ndume (APC-Borno) are the two front-runners for the position of senate majority leader.
They were among the targets of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s senate leadership campaign.
The campaign committee for Akpabio was led by Ndume, with Bamidele serving as his deputy.
Additionally, Sens. Aminu Tambuwal (PDP-Sokoto) and Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi) are candidates for the position of minority leader.
