Former senate president,  Bukola Saraki  has urged President Muhaammadu Buhari to sign the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Prohibition Bill.

Saraki made the plea via a series of posts on Twitter on Monday in response to a video published by BBC Africa which captured a senior lecturer of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) soliciting for sex from an admission seeker.

Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu, who is also a Senior Pastor at Foursquare Church, was seen speaking inappropriately to a reporter disguised as a 17-year-old admission seeker.

Noting that he was “appalled”  by the video, the former Senate president, the eighth assembly – which he chaired- passed the sexual harassment prohibition bill in 2016, but lamented that it had not received presidential assent to this time.

“In 2016, my colleagues and I in the 8th Senate passed the “Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Prohibition Bill” to prescribe a 5 year jail term for any lecturer, educationist or person in a position of authority in any tertiary institution in Nigeria found guilty of such conduct,” the tweet read.

Saraki described the conduct as “deplorable behaviour” and, therefore, asked President Buhari and the current National Assembly to revisit the bill to ensure such action is not allowed to fester.

“I appeal to the 9th Senate & President @MBuhari to revisit this Bill so that we can implement the institutional reforms necessary to safeguard our children in educational institutions in the country,” he tweeted.
